Tips

Alaska Airlines helps wine lovers take liquid souvenirs home with them after a wine-tasting trip.

The airline’s Wine Flies Free program allows Alaska Mileage Plan members flying from 29 various airports in the Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California wine regions to check up to 12 bottles of wine for free. Mileage Plan is open to any traveler and is free to join.

The program has expanded to other airports in California including San Jose (SJC), Fresno (FAT), Monterey (MRY), Ontario (ONT), Orange County (SNA), Palm Springs (PSP), Sacramento (SMF), San Diego (SAN), San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX), Burbank (BUR) and Santa Barbara (SBA).

Alaska suggests you tell the winery you’re planning to check the wine so they can secure it for transport. “This might include a foam-lined box, molded cardboard trays, or other protective packaging,” the airline said. “Make sure the box is left unsealed for inspection.”

“When you get to the airport, go to the ticket counter and let an Alaska customer service agent know that you’re checking a case of wine,” they added. “They will inspect the case, seal it and ensure that it is labeled with FRAGILE stickers. Pro tip: Don’t try to take your case of wine through the TSA security line. That’s way too much liquid.”

The company’s blog also says many wineries in Washington and Oregon offer free tastings when you show your Alaska Airlines boarding pass.
