It’s easy to become enamored by all the colorful trinkets and exotic goods available when you travel overseas. A lot of people end up breaking the break when it comes to buying souvenirs and gifts, but that doesn’t have to be the case.
Budget for Souvenirs
One of the best ways to stop yourself from spending an exorbitant amount on travel souvenirs is to set yourself a budget beforehand and don’t go over it. Your souvenir doesn’t have to be huge, just a small trinket to remind you of your travels.
Aim Small
Instead of a giant painting that’s expensive to get home, try to stick to only small items that can fit in your backpack. They’ll be easier to get through Customs and allow you to buy more items as you go.
No Food
Food is likely to be confiscated once you arrive home anyway, so enjoy the eats while you’re in the country and leave them behind when you go.
Avoid Cheap Items
Street vendors will often peddle poorly made goods that you can find anywhere in town, so avoid buying something the first time you see it. It’s probably not unique or even local. Instead, take a look at what locals own and ask around to see where you can find great gifts.
