Trends / Adventure

The town of Mulanje in the southernmost region of Malawi is known mostly as the heart of the country’s bustling tea growing industry. Adventure travelers might know it for something a little grander — the Mulanje Massif. This gigantic granite mountain range juts out of the surrounding plain to a height of 9,840 feet and an area of approximately 245 square miles. It’s one of the best climbs in Africa and draws tourists from around the world to witness its awe-inspiring vistas in person.

With more than 20 peaks to choose from, the mountain range offers days worth of exploration and some pretty spectacular sights. Mount Mulanje itself is what is known as a monadnock — a mountain that climbs out of a surrounding plain like an isolated island. Its peaks are separated by a lush landscape covered in forested river valleys, sparkling waterfalls and deep ravines. Mulanje even contains plant life that can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

During a sunny day it’s not uncommon to see the mountain covered in its thick mist storms that seem to give the range its own clouds, making for a breathtaking moment. Once atop the highest peak, Sapitwa, you’ll overlook a vast valley the ends of which hold even more of the region’s charming natural wonders including Zomba Mountain and Lake Chilwa.

If weary of camping outdoors in a foreign country, there are eight huts located at various points across Mulanje. Inside each you’ll find basic amenities like mattresses, fireplaces and small kitchens, but you’ll have to book them in advance and they fill up quickly.
