Colorado’s beloved Ski Train, nicknamed the Winter Park express, is back on line this winter after ceasing operations in 2009. It operated for 69 consecutive winters before going offline.
The train, run by Amtrak, runs between Denver and Winter Park, the closest major resort to the Mile High City. Service resumes Jan. 7, and the train will run every weekend and holiday Monday (such as Martin Luther King Day and Presidents Day) through March 26.
Trains leave Denver’s Union Station at 7 a.m. daily and arrive in Winter Park close to 9 a.m. The train returns to Denver at 6:40 p.m.. Amtrak, Winter Park ski resor, and Union Pacific railroad, which owns the tracks, reached a three-year agreement.
Tickets for adults are $39 one-way, and are on sale now.
The service is popular with skiers who are turned off by a difficult drive through the mountains in often iffy weather. The increasingly congested I-70 corridor is another deterrent to making the trip to the ski areas.
