Tips / Travel

Sometimes your smartphone just doesn’t cut it. Follow these tips to connect your laptop to the internet when there’s no WiFi around.

SIM Card

Some PC laptops have SIM card slot or can take a USB adapter. It won’t make calls, but some providers offer a secondary data SIM tied to your account.

Smartphone

Laptops can be tethered to many mobile devices connected to cellular networks. A USB connection works best, but your smartphone can also be used as a hotspot by creating a private WiFi network, though be aware it will eat through your data.

Mobile Hotspots

Most cell providers and plenty of third-party manufacturers offer mobile hotspot devices. Unlimited data plans often don’t allow tethering so these devices will come preloaded with data or run on a pay-as-you-go model.

Ethernet

The old-school method is also the fastest and most secure. Some newer laptops won’t have an Ethernet port, but adapters are available through a USB connection.

Satellite

If you’re in an RV, satellite internet can do but it’s extremely slow and requires large equipment.
