Creating the Perfect Signature Drink

There are so many arguments for having a signature drink or two for a party. Beyond the pure organizational simplicity (so many fewer mixers you’ll need to buy and so much less bartending time required), having a signature drink or two for a bachelorette is one of those little, thoughtful and, yes, Pinterest- and Instagram-worthy touches everyone will remember long after the party is over. Here’s how you can narrow down that long list of options to find the perfect signature drink for your best friend.

First, focus on a theme! Are you planning a nautical getaway? Then look for an appropriate rum-based drink to celebrate sailing. A skiing winter getaway? A hot chocolate bar and some hot apple cider will warm everyone up after a long day on the slopes.

Second, use your location for inspiration! Bahamas? Dark and stormies. Mexico? Margaritas or palomas. Beyond the liquor, incorporate local flavors and specialties into your drinks. In Maryland? Rim a bloody Mary with Old Bay seasoning. Maine? Try a blueberry-heavy lemonade drink. Texas or Georgia? Take advantage of the amazing local peaches in your beverages. Not sure where to start? Look up the drink menus at a couple of the hottest restaurants and coolest bars in the city you’re traveling to for some quick ideas.

Third, incorporate bride and group preferences. Some non-drinkers? Make sure there’s a non-alcoholic option just as special for them. Does the bride love spicy food? Mix in something with some jalapenos. And so on.

Fourth, consider tradition. Did most of the friends meet during a year abroad in Spain? Bring on the sangria. A favorite college drink recipe that can be updated and elevated? Or just brought back, for nostalgia’s sake? Soliciting suggestions from attendees ahead of time is sure to bring up some fun — and funny — memories for everyone to share.
