You spent all year planning and crafting the perfect Halloween costume, trying to think of something creative so no one could call you basic. You walked five miles in the dark collecting pieces of candy you hoped would last you until now — if you were lucky. Well, two days went by and all you had was a stomachache. You promise yourself next year will be different and you will make sure the candy lasts a full month — you’ll hide it if you have to, but you know it won’t work.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to get rid of the unwanted, or wanted but not needed, Halloween candy.
The Halloween Candy Buyback — yes it is a real thing — is sponsored by local dentists and various other businesses. The removal of the candy is in support of the troops and is sent to them overseas through Operation Gratitude and other services. Participants buy back the candy with cash, coupons, toothbrushes, hygiene kits, coupons for food, services or goods and many more creative ways. Find a buyback in your area or ship your candy directly to the non-profit distribution partner.
Freeze leftover candy as it will last months in the freezer. Enjoy a piece every now and then.
Bake other sweet treats. Melt the chocolate and use it to make chocolate covered strawberries or bananas, ice cream or to flavor hot chocolate/milk. Decorate a gingerbread house or other holiday baked goods.
Give it to friends, family, neighbors or local charities — everyone can use a pick me up or will have a use for it.
Be on the lookout for the Switch Witch, a mythical creature who switches children’s sugary candy and leaves toys, clothes or other healthy treats in its place.
