Tips / Destination

Visit the cosmopolitan and quaint city of Merida for an authentic Mexican cultural experience. Merida, the capital city of the Yucatan, is famous for its rich Mayan history and some of Mexico’s most important archaeological sites, as well as its vibrant folk music, art and culinary scenes.

Venture outside the city to the natural wonders and ruins of Chichen Itza and Uxmal or stay local and enjoy nightly park dances, Mexican folk dance events and the concerts, festivals and parades that are a staple of the destination.

Visit the Municipal Palace and the Government Palace, featuring stunning architectural features as well as iconic paintings and murals depicting Yucatan’s rich Mayan history and Aztec cultures.

Merida boasts several world-class museums, such as the Museo de Antropologia (http://www.mna.inah.gob.mx/), situated at the majestic Palacio Canton, home to artifacts from the Mayan ruins and the Museo Nacional de Arts Popular, offering a display of fine local arts and handmade crafts.

The city also boasts beautifully preserved parks and gardens, such as the Parque de las Americas, home to trees from each country on the American continent.

Merida’s cultural attractions are easily visited by foot, as the city’s small size makes it walkable.
