Tips / Destination

In a region world-renowned for its delectable wine, it can be difficult to embark on any other type of excursion that doesn’t involve a tasting at the local vineyards. In addition to sampling some of the region’s best grapes, there is a lot more to do in Tuscany, including the daytime activities below.

Rent bikes. One look at Tuscany’s countryside and you’ll understand why renting a bicycle to explore the region is one of the most popular outdoor activities. You can even cycle among wineries (responsibly and properly hydrated, of course). A number of local tour companies offer guided rides, or you can rent your own and take off into the roaming hills lined with vines. Feeling even more adventurous? Consider renting a Vespa for a true Italian experience.

Hike. For those with a little more time and energy, hiking is also a great way to explore the landscape of Tuscany. Pick a few towns in close proximity and squeeze a few hours of sightseeing into each town. Alternatively, go six miles offshore to the Isola del Giglio, a Tuscan island where each corner evokes a different time period and provides different scenery.

Go hunting … but not for animals. Truffles are fairly abundant in Tuscany and can be found along one of the aforementioned hikes or during a peaceful walk through the woods. The forests around San Miniato are the best places for such a hunt.

Go for a swim. With miles upon miles of gorgeous countryside, it can be easy to forget that Tuscany also borders the Tyrrhenian Sea. From Monte Argentario in the south to Forte de Marmi in the north, the coastline offers plentiful swimming coves accompanied by stunning sunsets.
