Trends / Food & Drink

As members of the Uber Eats generation, we can most likely say we have fallen into the takeout rut. Coming home from work starving and being too tired to cook anything or not having anything to cook means ordering takeout seems like the easiest solution. It may be a convenient solution once or twice, but a few times a week and you’ll be left feeling bloated with a drained bank account.

Throwback to the days our parents would have a nice, home-cooked meal prepared, a glorious time — now we rely on takeout and boxed or frozen food. There is a better way to live and it does not involve making an elaborate dinner for one every night. Regardless of how you feel about growing up, there are some traditional, standard recipes everyone should be able to master — whether you went to culinary school or not. Here are a few dishes every twentysomething should add to their repertoire.

Omelets are not only a great breakfast, but also a delicious breakfast for dinner option. The quick, 10-minute food is simple to make once you’ve got the cook of the eggs down. You can add anything you want from sausage and peppers to tomatoes and basil.

A whole roast chicken is one of the easiest and healthiest meals. You’ll have plenty of leftovers for future meals, so it’s a win-win. Most recipes call for super-high heat and three ingredients, chicken, salt and pepper.

The key to a delicious, melty grilled cheese is to toast one side of each slice of bread, sandwich the cheese between those toasted sides and then toast the other sides. Voilà.

You can never go wrong with basic roasted veggies. Buy them fresh and spread them on a pan to bake in the oven. Be careful and pay attention to those that take a little longer to cook — harder veggies like carrots, potatoes and broccoli take longer than mushrooms, tomatoes and spinach.

Guacamole — who doesn’t love chips and dip during a Friday-night movie marathon? Buy perfectly ripe avocados and start smashing. Be sure to salt aggressively and don’t forget the tomatoes.

So say goodbye to Uber Eats and hello to adulthood.
