The latest addition to the Philadelphia nightlife scene is Down, attached to Howl at the Moon near Rittenhouse Square. While Philadelphia is packed with plenty of great bars, Down aims for more of a lounge/club atmosphere, filling the gap between places like 1925 and clubs like Rumor and Coda (formerly Whisper).
For those who have been to Howl at the Moon, the connecting club side has a completely different vibe, with a more sophisticated atmosphere thanks to their blue lighting and modern décor. Howl is great for live music but Down is strictly relegated for dancing, with the DJs spinning a blend of Top 40, hip-hop and EDM, as well as the occasional throwback session. The night I went, I experienced a 20-minute mix of 90s/2000s pop, complete with N’Sync, Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears, though I have to say the crowd was into it.
While it hasn’t established itself with big-name DJs, Down is a much more intimate option for clubbers tired of Philly’s usual offerings at Rumor and Coda. Learn more at downphiladelphia.com.
