Packing is a huge consideration for any trip, but arguably becomes even more important on a long hike.
After all, you are most likely to be hauling your gear yourself, and any extra weight can really start to be an issue on a multi-day trek. Wise packing involves finding a balance between packing light in order to enjoy the walk, and making sure you have enough gear to make your trip comfortable.
Among the most essential items are socks. There is nothing worse than blistered feet when you have to walk again the next day, so invest in high-quality hiking socks and take enough pairs with you to make sure you always have some clean.
Given the importance of healthy feet, make sure to bring plasters in case you are struck by a dreaded blister. Another consideration should be a pair of spare shoes for when you are in camp, which give your feet a rest from bulky boots. Consider a pair of “barefoot” shoes that take up minimal space in your pack but still protect your feet.
Pack a tight-fitting base layer, which will keep you warm better than a bulky fleece. Team with a waterproof outer shell for an intelligent solution to both low temperatures and rainy weather.
It may seem like common sense but it is surprising how many people forget to take a head torch on hiking trips. Not only will the torch enable you to carry out camp chores more comfortably, it will help you to enjoy the long nights by reading a book or playing cards.
Every experienced hiker has their own finely-tuned pack for different trips, but these essentials will keep you safe, comfortable and happy on the trails.
