Glacier National Park is famous for its sculpted mountains, which rise dramatically from wildflower-studded meadows. Most visitors spend their time driving the famed Going to the Sun Road, rarely venturing out of their car for much more than a few photos.
But one of the best ways to see the park is to hike, taking your time to soak in the scenery and get some exercise in the process. You’ll have a more intimate experience, and you’re likely to see plenty of wildlife along the way.
Among the best hikes in the park are:
Highline Trail: The trail begins at Logan Pass and hugs a precipitous cliff before breaking out into wide meadows. This is one of the most highly visited for its big views of surrounding mountains.
Piegan Pass: Near Logan Pass, this trail also includes some of the classic mountain scenery Glacier is famous for. It’s a little steeper than the Highline Trail, which has only modest elevation gain.
Dawson Pass: From the Two Medicine area, this trail can include a boat ride if you’re inclined. Wildlife and wide-open views to distant mountains are among the highlights.
Grinnell Glacier: This trail takes you to view the 300-acre glacier, one of the park’s most famous.
