The small Montana town of Kalispell is perfectly positioned for a range of adventures, whether in the mountains or on a nearby lake or river. While the town itself presents a little less of a draw than the surrounding outdoors, there are a few things worth checking out if you’re passing through.
Downtown, check out the shops and restaurants selling western wear, antiques and local crafts and art. Stop in the Kalispell Brewing Company for a pint or two.
Kalispell is also a perfect jumping off point for exploring Glacier National Park, as well as hiking in and around the Flathead Valley. Mountain biking, skiing and a range of watersports provide year-round adventures.
One of the biggest draws in the area is Flathead Lake, so massive it’s actually the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. Sailing, wakeboarding, waterskiing and fishing await. Islands like Wild Horse Island (with actual wild horses and old growth forest) are also a draw.
If you’re staying in town, consider the Kalispell Grand Hotel, located in the city’s historic downtown. The bed and breakfast has been operating since 1912.
