The modernity and global influence in the United Arab Emirates make it a fairly international destination that welcomes travelers from around the world. Despite its international draw, its Muslim religion lends itself to certain cultural sensitivities that should be observed by all visitors.
In respect of the largely Muslim population, women should dress conservatively. However, at some of the intensely warm beaches and pools, swimsuits are acceptable. In other parts of the city, guests may find it more comfortable to wear loose-fitting clothing that covers the shoulders. When entering mosques or other religious grounds, women should cover their heads with a scarf or hood.
If invited to a local’s home, which is likely considering the well-known hospitality of residents of the UAE, remember to remove your shoes before entering the house. If a meal is served, eat the food and drink the drink with your right hand.
Alcohol is not common in the UAE as it is culturally forbidden, but adult beverages can be found at some shops, most hotels and in airport bars and duty-free shops. Natives of the UAE are conservative people, so appearing drunk, disorderly or out of control are considered extremely disrespectful. The same goes for public displays of affection, aside from holding hands.
