Trends / Adventure

Whether you arrive by plane or via the Trans-Siberian railway, Mongolia is a country that will leave you awestruck.

The capital of Ulan Bator is an interesting place that shows how some new money is changing Mongolian society, but it is out on the steppes you will get the best idea of how life is for most Mongolians. Out here, the horse rules, and is used for just about everything imaginable.

If you have the time, the experience and the gear, many people recommend buying your own horse in the capital and setting off across the country. While this offers a great way to drink in the vast open spaces, the nature and the nomadic lifestyle of the locals, it’s simply not feasible for most people.

Luckily, there are a number of options for people that only have a limited amount of time and riding experience. A popular destination for short trips is the Khangai Nuruu National Park, where National Geographic Expeditions takes riders for a four-day jaunt.

If you have slightly more time, check out Goyo Travel‘s selection of trips. There are a huge number of options available depending on time, expense and experience, with the 14-day Heart of Mongolia tour taking in some of the most interesting and more isolated areas.

Another good option is Zavkhan Trekking, which prides itself on offering adventures, not tours. Each of their rides are off the beaten trail and are proudly no frills. Don’t expect to be pampered, but do expect a truly memorable experience.

If you need to make more organized plans for your Mongolian horseback adventure, check out these three companies. For those who have the luxury of traveling without restriction, you can always go it alone.
