Exploring Whitefish, Mont.

Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

Low-key Whitefish, near the western end of Glacier National Park, is often seen as a jumping-off point to the famed park. But there’s plenty to see and do right in town, making it a worthwhile place to stay a few days.

Whitefish is worth visiting any time of year. In summer, you can cool off with a dip in Whitefish Lake, just a few blocks from downtown. City Beach is easily accessible but sometimes crowded, or you can head up to quieter Les Mason State Park, 15 minutes away, for a smaller beach — and a smaller crowd. At both beaches, you can rent stand-up paddleboards or kayaks to further explore the lake’s pristine cerulean waters.

Downtown Whitefish begs for exploration. The town’s buildings have a distinctive Wild West feel, but inside you’ll find modern shops selling local arts and crafts, outdoors gear, clothing and more. The vibrant restaurant and beverage scene here won’t disappoint, either. You’ve got a wide range of options, including Great Northern Brewing Company with its small balcony overlooking the surrounding mountains; Latitude 48, with Mediterranean fare and a great bar; and the Pig and Olive sandwich counter, with local sourcing and inventive combinations.

Outdoor opportunities abound year-round here: kayaking, paddleboarding, skiing, hiking and more.
