The Seven Wonders of the World are popular attractions people worldwide collectively decided were some of the most fascinating, archaeologically important and historic places to visit. Add them to your travel bucket list after learning more about them below.

Chichen Itza is one of the most visited locations in Mexico. It is referred to as el castillo (the castle) and is a pyramid structure and a former Mayan place of worship and was considered a sacred place to the Mayans.

 

“Christ the Lord Our Redeemer” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a monumental and colossal statue of Jesus Christ built between 1922 and 1931. It is a whopping 30 meters tall and weighs more than 1 million pounds, made of concrete and glass. There are a lot of steps that lead up to monument offering a great view of Rio de Janeiro.

 

The Great Wall of China was built along the east-to-west line across the northern Chinese border to protect the Chinese from Eurasian nomads. It was built 220–206 BC and is the longest wall in the world (13,171 miles long).

 

The Taj Mahal in Agra, India, is a white Islamic monument with beautiful domes situated on top of the buildings. There is an exquisite lake and garden that sit in front of the building, giving it an ethereal look. The building was originally constructed to house the body of Mumatz Mahal, the wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.

 

Petra, Jordan, is a city famous for its rock architecture, often referred to as “Rose City” because of the stones’ color. It is an exploration of art and architecture through stone. You can see structures carved into the stones to make stunning monuments.

 

The Roman Colosseum in Rome, Italy, is a majestic amphitheater site that holds so much history from ancient times. It was used to host gladiator contests and mock fights. The building is damaged partly due to natural disasters and robbers but sits strong in Rome for visitors to behold in all its glory.

 

Machu Picchu in Peru was an Inca site located on a mountain ridge. It is believed to have been an estate for an Incan emperor
