Bosztorpuszta, Hungary

Trends / Adventure

If you look beyond the major cities, you’ll soon realize Hungary mainly consists of rural areas. In fact, some 20 percent of its landmass is covered in forests, and The Great Plain is a paradise for fans of the outdoors. Head to Kiskunsag National Park for some of the best horse riding in Europe, and impressive horse shows during the summer months.

Hungary is also a great place for cyclists, and you can rent a two-wheeled steed in most towns. Cycling is good all over the country, but some of the favored areas include the vineyards around Badacsony.

The Badacsony region is also a top destination for hikers, with winding trails and amazing views of Lake Balaton. The largest freshwater lake in Europe is a haven for windsurfing, sailing and other water sports.

Another good choice is Lake Heviz, some five miles from Lake Balaton. Heviz is the largest thermal lake in the world, and the town of the same name is packed with spas. Get some thermal treatments, go hiking or take a bike out for a day of exploring.

The town of Gyor is found at the confluence of the Danube, Raba and Rabca rivers, making it a great spot for those that love the water. You can also use the town as a base to visit the Pannonhalma Monastery, which at around a thousand years old is one of the oldest historical sites in Hungary.
