Tips / Travel

Depending on where you travel, the method of mingling with the locals can vary. From handshakes to single-cheek kisses to full-on hugs, it can be difficult to navigate the waters of cultural norms as you introduce yourself to a foreign way of life. If you plan to visit the places listed below, here are a few hints about how to greet the locals.

Most South American countries: In Colombia, Argentina, Peru and Chile, locals typically greet their friends with one quick kiss on the cheek. People in the Philippines use this practice to greet each other, as well.

Southern and Eastern Europe: Countries like Spain, Italy, Greece, Romania and Croatia usually kiss once on each cheek, for a total of two kisses. Pay attention to which cheek the locals kiss first in order to avoid some awkward first encounters. This act doesn’t just apply to Europe: Brazilians use this way as well when they say hello.

Citizens of Belgium, Slovenia, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Egypt make up the most diverse category of greeters, all of whom tend to kiss each other on the cheek three times, making for an awfully long greeting process with large groups.

The United States, England and some English territories: U.S. and British folks use an old-fashioned handshake or hug to greet people they don’t know and/or people they know well.

When in doubt, keep an eye on the locals in social situations to learn the best (and least awkward) way to immerse yourself in the culture.
