Haggling With Thailand Street Vendors

There are perhaps no better hagglers on Earth as the men and women peddling goods in Thailand. They’re experts at the art and, if you go to battle with these men and women unprepared, you’re bound to be out a few bucks by the end of it.

Set a Price

First and foremost, always know the maximum amount you’re willing to spend on an item before engaging a vendor, and spend no more than that. Nothing on a street in Thailand should cost you more than a few dollars if you haggle well.

Comparison Shop

Never buy an item at the first place you see it. There is always another vendor or five selling the same, and probably at a cheaper price. Hit as many as possible and look for the one selling at the cheapest starting point, then start working him down.

Walk Away

Don’t be afraid to walk away. You’re not obligated to purchase anything, no matter what sob story a vendor might tell you to try and convince you to buy something. If you’re uncomfortable with the price, just start walking. Often, they’ll chase you down and suddenly you’ll find the price dropping substantially.

Don’t Be Rude

Traditionally, you want to start haggling at half the price initially quoted. Purposely lowballing a vendor is considered disrespectful. Always remember it’s supposed to be part of the fun, and you’re only haggling over a couple of bucks in most cases.
