Greece has some spectacular hiking trails to explore due to its mountainous topography. From the mainland to the islands, there are great routes to discover all over Greece. You can even hike Mount Olympus, where the ancient Greek gods live.
Some routes are well maintained, and others are hard to follow. Get a good map from Anavasi or Terrain if you are heading away from the popular trails.
Avoid the scorching summer heat and head off in spring (April to May) to get the most out of your trip. September to October is also a good time to go, but you’ll miss out on the wildflowers that spring up after the winter rains.
You can sign up for an organized tour with Trekking Hellas or one of a number of smaller companies. There are one-day excursions and longer trips, such as a week-long hike in the Mount Olympus and Meteora area.
Other popular areas for hikers include the forested Pelion Peninsula, the Vikos Gorge and the Peloponnese. Of the Greek islands, Crete, Naxos, Tilos and Nisyros are famed for their hiking trails.
As you can see there is no shortage of options for keen hikers in Greece. Time to pack your boots and strike out on the trail!
