Ireland is hoping 10 ancient Pilgrim Paths will be the country’s answer to Spain’s famous Camino de Santiago. The country hopes visitors will flock to the area, as they did in medieval times.
The paths are scattered around the country, from Glen Colm Cille and Lough Derg in County Donegal, to the Sli Mor taking in Clonmacnoise in County Offaly, and from St Kevin’s Way at Glendalough in County Wicklow, down to the Cosan na Naomh Pilgrim Path on the Dingle peninsula.
Ireland’s heritage council in 2014 started a national Pilgrim Paths Day each spring, which aims to bring people out in droves. In addition to giving people access to these spiritually important paths, Ireland hopes the trails will drive tourism to some of the country’s most economically depressed rural areas.
The paths are based on trips throughout Ireland undertaken by pilgrims from Hungary, France, Italy and Holland in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Travelers could walk all 10 paths, but that process would take about a month — about the same time it takes to complete the Camino de Santiago in full.
