Trends / Adventure

Head to the town of Huaraz in the Peruvian Cordillera Blanca for the chance to hike some of the best trails in Latin America. At 3,100 meters above sea level, visitors may need some time to adapt to the altitude, but, as soon as you’ve acclimatized, it’s time to head out.

Experienced climbers might want to take on the Nevado Huascaran, which at 6,768 meters is the highest mountain in the region. Those who prefer trekking can explore the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Huayhash.

The former features popular routes such as the Santa Cruz trek and the Quilcayhuanca Valley trek, while Huayhuash is home to an iconic route which shares the same name as the mountain range itself. If you don’t have time to embark on a multiday adventure, head out on a day hike in the Llaca Valley, Rajucolta Valley or Laguna Paron.

There are plenty of companies offering hiking and climbing tours in Huaraz. Always check online for testimonials before you book and remember cheaper tours often provide lower quality food and equipment. If comfort is a concern, it’s worth paying a premium to go with one of the better equipped companies.

Huaraz is around eight hours by bus from Lima and three hours from the coastal city of Chimbote. Book ahead in peak times to make sure you can get a place on the more popular tours.
