The Atacama is the world’s driest desert and a beautiful honeymoon destination. Located right between the Pacific coastline and the Andes Mountains, Chile’s barren landscape is at once both terrifying and stunning. It’s also the perfect place to spend some time alone.
Though the desert is primarily uninhabited, you’ll find a few boutique hotels. The Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa is one such place. It offers Mid-Century decorations, a wine bar, on-site restaurant and two pools. It also boasts a spa that offers volcanic mud treatments, in addition to beautiful gardens surrounding the grounds.
A second option is Awasi Atacama. This lodge-style hotel features luxurious adobe cabanas for each couple, a communal courtyard lounge, a pool and a spa. There are also nearby villages to explore and one of the clearest night skies in all of South America. Cell reception and internet are sketchy, so it’s the perfect option for anyone looking to spend a honeymoon a bit off the grid.
Whichever you choose, they provide access to some of the most breathtaking scenery in Chile. The surrounding desert has hot springs, sheer cliffs and the world-famous Valley of Moon and Valley of Death. The region is popular among astronomers, so if you’ve got a love for the universe there are plenty of opportunities for stargazing.
