Tips / Travel

Looking to experience a new destination in 2018? Here are some of the hottest places to visit.

Antarctica

No pun intended with the headline. Due to climate change, Antarctica is an ever-changing destination and, unfortunately, much of the continent melted and large icebergs are breaking off — including its largest, the size of Delaware, which broke off this summer, forever changing the continent’s landscape. A record-breaking 46,000 visitors are expected to travel to Antarctica in 2018.

Visit the destination with PONANT, the only cruise line with a Clean Ship fleet, named for its sonar technology capable of tracking icebergs so as to not disturb the ocean floor. Crystal Cruises, G Adventures, Celebrity Cruises and Aurora Expeditions also travel to Antarctica, all part of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, an organization promoting safe and environmentally responsible travel to the region.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Celebrating its 10th year as a UNESCO World Heritage site, San Miguel de Allende is a vibrant destination known for its art scene, once home to the likes of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. There are more than 130 art galleries along the city’s cobblestone streets, and the Guanajuato International Film Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2018.

Mallorca, Spain

The Balearic Islands celebrate their 35th anniversary in 2018, and Mallorca, the largest, also celebrates the institution of natural gas as the only source of energy across the whole island — a huge step in combatting the effects of climate change. Show your support by visiting and taking in the island’s rich culture. Visit the stunning Belmond La Residencia in the artsy village of Deià, where Andrew Lloyd Webber famously composed some of his most notable pieces.

The Caribbean

Now more than ever, Caribbean destinations need the support of travelers as they continue to rebuild following the hurricanes in fall 2017. Some of the destinations you can and should visit following the hurricanes are the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Jamaica, St. Lucia and the Cayman Islands.

In 2017, Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort in St. Lucia unveiled new beachfront residences; Rockhouse Hotel in Negril, Jamaica, was named No. 1 by Condé Nast Traveler for Top Resorts in the Caribbean and landed in the top 1 percent in the Trip Advisor Traveler’s Choice Awards; Kimpton Seafire Resort & Spa opened in the Cayman Islands, the first boutique resort for the destination; and, in St. Kitts, the first Park Hyatt opened on Christophe Harbour.

Additionally, travelers to Guadeloupe benefit from new twice-weekly flights on Air France from Atlanta (ATL) to the islands, and American Airlines increased seasonal flights from Miami (MIA).
