If there’s anything the French love more than their cheese and cigarettes, it’s their fashion. You’ll want to fit in when you arrive, so here are a few tips for making yourself look a little less like a tourist and more like a local.

No Caps

Wearing a baseball cap isn’t something often seen in France, particularly in the cities. In fact, with all the eccentric hairstyles in this place it might be a great time to experiment with your own.

Lose the Baggy Clothes

Like most Europeans, the French prefer clothes that are comfortable but tight fitting as opposed to the baggier style many Americans have adopted. Lose the shorts that go down past your knee and contain more pockets than any one person ever needs.

Buy a Messenger Bag

Satchel, Carry-All, Messenger Bags, whatever you want to call them. you’ll see French men and women wearing them everywhere you go. They’re a great alternative to wallets, which are often bulky and easy to spot, and they’re actually quite fashionable and available in a wide array of designs.

Avoid Sneakers

French folks loathe sneakers unless they’re working out. Nothing says cheap and American like a natty pair of Nikes that haven’t seen the wash in months. Instead, opt for something a little less casual, though still comfortable.

Opt for Contacts

You won’t find many French people walking around with glasses other than shades. Instead, it’s time to learn how to insert those contacts you’ve been leaving in the bathroom cabinet.
