How to Fly With Special-Needs Travelers

Tips / Travel

Traveling can be a headache for anyone, but all the more so when flying with passengers who have special needs. Despite common misconceptions, the airlines and staff are there to help, you just need to notify them in advance and clearly communicate your needs.

Everyone knows the TSA offers privileges for seniors (those older than 75 don’t have to remove their shoes in line) and people with mobility issues but many will also make special accommodations for passengers with autism or other disabilities. Start by checking the TSA website for specific information on medical devices and medicines and be sure to arrive at the airport early. Give yourself enough time to declare medicines and comfortably get through security, there is nothing more stressful than standing in line while your flight is boarding.

Consider working with a travel agency focused on special-needs travelers. Companies such as Trips Inc. offer packages specifically designed for special-needs travelers. Also, ask special education teachers and consult doctors for advice on how to prepare for flights.

Pack and prepare; this almost goes without saying, but be ready for the unexpected. If you can, take a trial run to the airport so that your passenger will be somewhat familiar with traveling and the actual trip will not be an entirely new experience. With a little planning, any traveler can relax and enjoy their next flight!
