How to Own a Dog and Still Travel Often

Tips / Travel

A lifestyle full of travel doesn’t have to preclude you from owning a pet. If you’re a dog fanatic like me but also can’t stand the thought of less than five trips a year, you’re in luck — it’s easy to own a dog and still be a world explorer.

Take Him With You

Admittedly, this is the most expensive option available and not possible in every country, but in most cases you can take your best furry friend with you. Check with both airlines and governments to ensure your pet will be legal and train him to handle long rides in the air.

Find Him a Human Friend

Too many people get dogs and then dump them at the local boarding kennel when they need to leave town. This impersonal method of doggie car is stressful and lonely for the dog, so get him a human friend instead. Find a dog sitter in your area and let her take him for walks throughout the week, so he’ll feel right at home with her while you travel.

Travel Locally

By local, we mean within the United States. Dogs are excellent road trip companions and can easily handle short plane rides across the States. There’s no reason you can’t explore every nook and cranny of this continent while your puppy is alive.

Train Him Well

If you’re going to travel with a dog, make sure he’s trained well. Enroll him in classes, not just the puppy ones, and continue his training throughout his life so he can handle changing situations.
