The number of available hostels, especially in large international cities, can be nothing short of overwhelming. A few tips will help you narrow down your never-ending list of options and choose the hostel that best fits your needs.
Many hostel-search websites allow you to search using a map rather than a list of addresses. This will help you figure out where your lodging will be located in relation to where you want to spend most of your time.
When researching hostels, check out what is included in the rental rate. Most offer free WiFi, bedding and other such standard services, but what about breakfast, laundry or group tours? Are they free or included in the price, or are they optional? Those pinching pennies may consider these important factors. In the same vein, a hostel with a kitchen is a plus as you can save money by preparing your own meals.
Regarding price, hostels can run pretty cheap but sometimes they are cheap for a reason (e.g., noise, cleanliness, poor customer service). Read the reviews and see if the hostel is rated in terms of value for price.
Reviews should also focus on the safety of the hostel. Search the hostel listing as well as comments from previous guests regarding the availability of lockers, guests’ overall feelings of safety during their stays and whether there is a 24-hour front desk attendant.
