How To Survive a Long Bus Ride

Traveling by bus is one of the cheapest ways to get from Point A to Point B. Depending on the country in which you are traveling, the conditions of the bus and the adherence to publicized schedules may vary. The best way to prepare is to allow extra time for delays and to pack plenty of patience in your carry-on bag. Here are a few other ways to make the most of a long bus ride.

Pack snacks. The journey may be advertised as an easy three hours, but literal roadblocks such as traffic or construction zones may pop up unexpectedly. Thus, pack a few snacks for the ride since you may not have the opportunity (or possibility) to stop along the way.

Dress comfortably. This tip can be applied to any type of travel for an extended period of time. Wear layers and breathable fabrics in case of continuous changes in temperature.

Plan your route. This does not mean becoming the bus navigator. Instead, map out your route once on the bus. Think about where you may be the most comfortable sitting for an extended period of time. You may not have a choice, but if you do, consider aisle or window, the front or the back. The front of the bus tends to be a better spot for those who are prone to motion sickness while the back of the bus may be located next to a lavatory, which can be anything but pleasant.

Occupy yourself. If a long ride is on the horizon, bring books, tablets, games and anything else to keep yourself entertained. Toss in a comfortable pillow for the inevitable nap as you ride off to your next destination.
