Cuba has finally opened its borders to U.S. citizens once again, but getting there can be a bit tricky. Follow these tips to make sure your trip goes smoothly.

Book Through a Reputable Agent or Site

Getting to Cuba isn’t as simple as hopping on Priceline and booking the cheapest flight you see. In fact, as of this writing, Priceline and Expedia aren’t offering straight flights to the island nation. You can, however, find itineraries on CheapAir and Kayak. Your best bet is to find a reputable travel agent familiar with the laws regulating travel for American tourists to Cuba.

Consider a Roundabout Trip

If you’re not comfortable booking through a lesser-known travel site, you can still use the big names. Sites like Expedia will allow you to book a flight to Mexico, then transfer to another flight heading towards Cuba. It might even be cheaper than flying straight through.

Take a Cruise

If you can’t get the air traveled figured out, you’re free to travel by sea. Most popular American cruise companies haven’t added Cuba to their cruise plans just yet, but they’re sure to start doing it soon. The country has a small infrastructure dedicated to cruise ships and can’t accommodate too many at this time. Right now you can book through Canadian-based Cuba Cruise.

Check the Local Laws

Cuba is known for its strict laws and they have some pertaining to American-Cuban relations you should be aware of. For instance, in some areas you’re only allowed to visit tourist attractions like museums, but can’t head to the beach. Make sure you check the local laws of the area you plan on heading to in order to avoid any hairy legal situations.
