1. Leave your booty shorts at home…
…along with your pearls and Coach purse. We all want to look cute while vacationing, but looking cute and becoming a target can become a little blurry. Stick to culturally appropriate clothes — research your destination — and, if you must, go with muted jewelry like hemp, simple fabric bracelets and small earrings.
2. Be aware of your surroundings.
Thieves and attackers have too many tricks — be on guard at all times. Hold your belongings while sitting anywhere — even on the bus — know your exits, and steer clear of places that give you a funny feeling. Just channel Jason Bourne and you’ll be fine.
3. Don’t go out at night alone.
We’ve all been told this one. But somewhere between the last glass of wine and realizing your friend left you for a handsome Swiss man, you find yourself in a predicament. Spend the extra cash for a reliable cab or call a friend to meet you. Make sure someone knows you’re going from point A to B and make a better plan next time.
4. Have your game face on.
In your head you need to tell yourself, “I am a tough chick and no one wants to mess with me.” Squinted eyes and a determined stance help too. If you think you’re vulnerable, your body language will tell people. Think strong.
5. Have a plan.
Know where you’re going, write down where you’re coming from — for the cab driver when you get lost — and have a rough idea of what you want to do. Whether it’s wandering the market or finding a new restaurant, be prepared for the unexpected.
