United Airlines is in the midst of a major initiative to modernize its fleet over the next several years. After first announcing the plan in 2021, planes fitted with United’s signature interior are finally beginning to appear across the airline’s narrowbody fleet of Boeing and Airbus planes. United flyers are sure to notice these enhancements from the moment they step on board: Each new or updated plane sports remodeled seats, seatback entertainment screens for everyone, Bluetooth connectivity and more, all adding up to a better experience on every journey.
Earlier this spring, United announced another milestone in its unprecedented fleet modernization efforts, as its first Airbus A319 with the United signature interior took to the skies. On its first flight from Chicago O’Hare to Des Moines, Iowa, each passenger got the chance to experience the Bluetooth-enabled inflight entertainment systems, power outlets and larger overhead bins available throughout the cabin. First-class travelers also got the chance to try updated seats installed in the United First® cabin, which feature new privacy wings among other improvements.
“This aircraft interior is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of the teams behind it,” said United Vice President of Technical Services John Wiitala. “It represents a new era in air travel and promises to make flying more enjoyable for our passengers.”
Flights with the United signature interior are limited for now, but will soon become a common sight for frequent travelers. The airline expects about one-third of its mainline narrowbody fleet will feature the updated interior by the end of 2023. Beyond that, United plans to roll out the modernized cabin to its entire mainline fleet over the next several years.
From the handful of flights that have already flown with the new interior, United says the improvements are a hit with passengers. The Bluetooth enabled inflight entertainment systems allow everyone to use their favorite pair of headphones to watch movies and TV onboard. At the same time, customers and flight crews alike have raved about the more spacious overhead bins, which allow nearly all carry-on bags to fit even on full flights. The materials used to create the signature interior also prioritize sustainability by lowering energy consumption, thanks to lightweight components, efficient LEDs and other improvements.
Keep your eye out for the United signature interior the next time you “fly the friendly skies,” and expect to see more of it soon.
