LGTBQ acceptance has been slow moving in the Romanian capital of Bucharest. However, there are a few hot spots around town where the crowd is welcoming and you can stay out of trouble. As with any country that still has trouble with progress and civil rights, displays of affection should be kept to a minimum when exploring here.
The nightlife scene in Bucharest is focused primarily around the Floreasca area, where you’ll find plenty of quirky, gay-friendly bars like Control Club, a hip dance pub with live music and queer nights. Expirat and Eden are also great options if you’re looking for a place to dance. Queens Club is the oldest gay bar in Bucharest and tables are often booked in advance on the weekends, while Thor’s Hammer is the newest option and frequently hosts lesbian, karaoke and beat nights.
Lente & Cafea is one of the best restaurants in Bucharest and offers an experimental menu with a fusion of chicken and fish cuisine. There are also regular jazz events throughout the week. Energiea is another great option due to a welcoming atmosphere and healthy, international food. It sits right next to the beautiful Cismigiu Gardens, making it the perfect option after a morning stroll.
Bucharest has a long way to go when it comes to civil rights, but the atmosphere is ripe for change and progress is coming. For now it’s a wonderful place to take in the architecture and wonderful landscapes as long as you’re okay with refraining from a little PDA.
