The United States’ 12th-largest city is home to a surprisingly large LGBTQ community, despite residing in one of the country’s most conservative strongholds. Here, you’ll find plenty of entertainment geared toward the gay population and visitors. In fact, Circle City has dozens of historic gay establishments.

Nightlife in Indianapolis centers on the downtown area and a little further north in Broad Ripple Village. Greg’s is one of the longest running gay bars in the city and still remains one of the top spots to visit in the Old Northside communities. Karaoke lovers will love spending a night at Metro, while Zonie’s Closest is the go-to bar for great drag shows.

If you’re looking to take in a show, the Mass Ave Arts District is a popular one among the community. Here, you’ll find the iconic Indiana Repertory Theatre as well as the Theatre on the Square. The district lies within the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, a 7.5-mile path that connects five of the city’s districts.

When you’re ready to eat, hang around Broad Ripple Village and try out Recess, one of the state’s most famous restaurants. There’s also the nearby Red Key Tavern, a favorite of Kurt Vonnegut.

Those lucky enough to be in town in the month of June can partake in the city’s Pride events, one of the largest in the country. While the rural areas surrounding Indianapolis have a ways to go, the city itself has seen an influx in LGBTQ residents over the years and is fast becoming one of the best places in the United States to let loose and feel at home.
