Contrary to what it might seem, the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is not a zoo. It is, in fact, a wildlife sanctuary that houses numerous species of animals while working to rehabilitate them and also provide them a home when their habitat becomes endangered. For that reason there’s no guarantee you’ll see any particular species, but it’s a good bet you’ll come across a few monkeys.
There are three separate paths to take if you choose to wander off on your own through the facility and all of them have monkeys wandering about freely. A couple of them contain animals like servals, which I never saw, and lions, which I did see. It’s entirely safe, though, because they’re in enclosures.
The guided tour is your best option for visiting the facility. The tour guides are knowledgeable about the animals within and provide excellent information about why they’re endangered and what the LWC is doing to help them. They can also give you tips on ways to help out. The price of admission is low and the center itself is beautiful and peaceful to walk through.
You can tell the staff here really loves the animals and would do anything to protect them. If you’re ever in Lilongwe there’s no excuse for not stopping in for a bit and lending a helping hand if you can.
