Lisbon reopened its tram line after a 23-year hiatus.

The line reopened April 24, marking the date when tram 24E, operated 1905–1995, resumed the route from Campolide to Praça Luís de Camões in Bairro Alto.

Before now, traveling from the city’s downtown (Baixa-Chiado) to Amoreiras (a business and shopping area on the North side) was possible by bus or Metro only, and it involved a steep walk uphill from the Marquês de Pombal stop.

The reopening means locals and visitors will be able to access these areas more easily.

The tram is operated with an iconic yellow car popular with Instagrammers. Along the route, must-see points include Baroque church Igreja and Museu São Roque; the viewpoint Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara; the recently restored Jardim Botânico; the favorite hangout Príncipe Real; art museum Fundação Arpàd Szenes–Vieira da Silva; and high-end Amoreiras Shopping Center.

There are currently six regular tram routes operating in other areas of Lisbon, covering much of its historic center. Tickets cost €2.90 (one way) and the line operates daily 7 a.m.–8 p.m. (weekdays), 7:30 a.m.–7 p.m. (Saturdays), and 10:30 a.m.–6 p.m. (Sundays and national holidays).
