Whether you’re on a short-term trip or spending a longer amount of time in one place, having friends to join on adventures, grab a meal or just knock back a few beers with can make your travels that much better. Try our easy ways to strike up a friendship anywhere.
Stay in hostels.
One of the easiest ways to meet other similar-minded people is by staying at a hostel. Choose one with a lively common area and a variety of activities — and put down your smartphone — to strike up a conversation with fellow travelers.
Join tours.
Even if you enjoy exploring on your own, there are usually a few activities made more convenient by joining a tour. You’ll also have the luxury of meeting a smaller group of people in an intimate setting, making it easier to get to know people in a more casual setting.
Get involved with meetups/couchsurfing.
If you’re sticking around for a bit, it’s worth checking out Meetups or Couchsurfing groups in the area. You’ll have a better chance of connecting with locals and getting to know spots you wouldn’t normally find on your own.
Say yes to invitations.
The hardest part about making friends is jumping in. Commit to saying, “yes” to any social invitations you’re given. You’ll be surprised how easy it gets!
