Make Your Budget Go Further in Central America

There is so much to see in the relatively compact continent of Central America that you may find yourself extending your trip, placing extra pressure on your budget. Here are a few easy ways to make sure you don’t run out of cash before you’ve really experienced the main attractions.

Shun the more expensive, tourist-focused buses like Tica Bus in favor of converted U.S. school buses known as chicken buses. Along with a healthy dose of nostalgia, you’ll get around for a lot less money while getting a window into local life.

Don’t eat where your guidebook says. Although recommendations from well-known travel guides can be great for solo travelers who want to meet other foreigners, they are rarely the cheapest spots in town. Hit the local market or stick to street food if you are watching the pennies.

Sleep in hotels not part of a chain and aimed at locals rather than tourists. Always ask to see your room before you hand over any money, and use your own padlock on the door if possible, but if you feel safe sleeping away from the tourist hordes there are some great deals to be had. Most of the large “party” hostels allow non-guests to eat and drink on their premises, so you won’t necessarily lose out socially and you will end up saving a pretty penny.

For those trying to drive costs down to the bare minimum, take a tent and sleep on the hostel grounds. Most are accommodating and offering hefty discounts to campers. If you ever want to camp on private ground, be sure to ask permission to avoid any surprises.
