Trends / Adventure

Mexico’s Copper Canyon serves as the backdrop for one of the country’s most scenic and jaw-dropping regions. It’s four times larger than the Grand Canyon and serves as the resting place for some of Mexico’s historic colonial cities. A visit here is full of incredible adventure and exploration and should be on every traveler’s list.

Mexico’s Copper Canyon and Colonial Cities tour is a the perfect way to discover the region without having to skimp on comfortable accommodations, while also learning a great deal about the history of the area. The 10-day, nine-night trip begins in Phoenix before venturing into the high Sonoran Desert. Here, you’ll uncover the beautiful Mission San Xavier del Bac, a mission dating back to 1692. From there, you’ll head to Hermosillo, a town full of colonial architecture including stunning cathedrals and the famed Government Palace.

Nearby you’ll explore where pearls come from on the Sea of Cortez and then a “magical” silver mining town at the foot of the Sierra Madre Mountains. You’ll spend two days discovering the region through the towns of Alamaos and El Fuerte while staying in magnificent colonial mansions and enjoying folkloric dance shows before dinner.

From there you’ll board the world-famous “El Chepe” train into the mountains. The rails cross through cavernous tunnels and soaring bridges to a height of 5,900 feet before arriving in the heart of Copper Canyon. After a few days spent in the canyon you’ll depart for the town of Guerrero for a traditional Be My Guest experience, then head onward to the adobe complex of Paquime. Finally, your group will head back across the Chihuahua Desert into America and on toward Tucson before heading home.
