Cruises have been in the press in recent years and, let’s be honest, not all of it has been good. In fact, the coverage can be disparaging at best and mortifying at worst. There is also the more benign question of the target demographic. It seems it is hard to find a cruise that suits people under 40, but don’t have kids. Do interesting cruises exist for 20- and 30-somethings? And more to the point, is it worth the time and money?
If a relaxing experience on the open seas is something you crave, then look into the newest fleet of cruise ships that cater specifically to this age group. The most talked about company currently is U by Uniworld. This company is attempting to modernize and infuse new energy into the usual cruise experience. Their ships (the A and the B) have not yet taken their maiden voyages, but they are accepting reservations for spring 2018. These boats specialize in river cruises including the Seine, the Danube and the Rhine. Passengers are encouraged to leave the ship when it docks and there are tools for planning excursions. The onboard experience is also catered to your interests, inclusive of a rooftop lounge and excellent food options, which include local street food and vegan and vegetarian options.
If a more adventurous cruise is what you seek, check out National Geographic Expeditions. These are pricey and can run anywhere from $4,000–25,000, but they do take care of the planning for expeditions that might be too complicated to manage on your own. If traveling to the Antarctic or circumnavigating Iceland is something you have always wanted to do, then take a look.
