Trends / Adventure

The vast country of Mongolia is home to nomadic tribes that rely on horses for their livelihood. There is no better way to explore the steppes and deserts of the country than on horseback. A number of tour operators offer guided trips that take in some of the highlights on trips of varying lengths.

Zavkhan Trekking offers small-group trips that promise to be adventures rather than tours. The focus is on riding, hiking and taking in the local culture rather than luxury tourism. The company has run tours for 12 years and offers trips of around two weeks.

In The Saddle is another operator offering riding trips in Mongolia that last for 10 days. The company is vastly experienced in equine tourism and has trips all over the world.

Equitours has four different routes in Mongolia of varying lengths and expense. Trips range in price from $2,550–5,545, taking in the most famous sights of the country as well as more isolated areas.

If you have the time and equipment, you can set off on your own across the country. Some intrepid travelers buy themselves a horse in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar before riding out in search of adventure. You’d have to have a great deal of time and experience to take on such an adventure, but it’s incredibly rewarding for those that do so.
