Monocle made its name covering world affairs, business, culture and design from its base in London, before expanding its global reach via a network of bureaus around the world. Now the company has moved into the travel guide sector, making use of its deep knowledge of world cities to give readers an inside line on the hot spots and trends.
The Monocle Travel Guide series begins with the magazine’s home of London, alongside New York, providing visitors with invaluable resources to what can be overwhelming cities for the uninitiated. The slim books cover history, design and architecture, as well as interesting shops and restaurants, with entries organized by themes rather than by geographical zones.
Although the market for travel guides suffered due to competition from online resources such as Yelp and TripAdvisor, Monocle is aiming to capture a premium feel instead of focusing on the hottest disposable trends. The guides will be published exclusively in print, in partnership with German publisher Gestalten, and take advantage of the company’s presence around the world to provide in-depth insight into chosen destinations. As well as London and New York, further guides are planned for Hong Kong and Tokyo.
The fact that they are written by contributors who have lived in the cities in question means the Monocle guide books should provide a more in-depth insight into your destination, compared to the sometimes superficial list of tourist traps provided by other travel guides. Learn more at monocle.com.
