Tips / Travel

Millennial travelers are searching for ways to explore beneath the surface of their chosen destination, instead of visiting the obvious attractions suggested by traditional guidebooks and listings websites. One tried-and-tested way of doing so is to get in touch with a friend or a friend-of-a-friend who lives in the city you will be visiting.

The Localeur app offers a similar insight to those of us who aren’t fortunate enough to count on a wide network of contacts. The app promises to draw on the knowledge of “a community of locals who want to help you experience the best places to eat, drink and play,” in order to improve your traveling experience.

The site first launched in Austin, Texas, and now features information on 12 cities around the United States. The service relies on a network of local contributors who upload their tips to the city for the benefit of visitors, and the premise gained Localeur a spot on the Forbes.com list of best travel apps for this year.

Localeur is available both online and through an iOS app, and users can search for recommendations by topic, city or contributor, which cover such diverse areas as entertainment, art and culture, outdoors and food and dining, among others.

The app has a Nearby Places feature which users can open when they arrive to their destination, enabling them to find interesting places within easy reach. The Localeur community is still growing but it could develop into a valuable resource for travelers in the United States, and make those short trips to unfamiliar cities a whole lot more enjoyable.
