The city of Merida is the capital of the Yucatan province, and it has some great museums.
In the center of town lies the Contemporary Art Museum, right next to the cathedral. It’s impossible to miss it. Here you will find works by great local artists such as Fernando Castro Pacheco.
Those who are interested in the history of Merida itself should visit the Museum of the City. Exhibitions track the development of the city from pre-Hispanic times.
For more artwork, head to the Popular Art Museum. It’s home to more than 800,000 pieces of art representative of local culture and artistic styles. There are dresses, clay figures, ceramic vases and plenty of gold and silver jewelry.
Perhaps the most impressive museum in the city is the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya, a huge cultural space dedicated to the study of the Mayan world. It’s well-funded and comprehensive, with state-of-the-art exhibits that let visitors deep dive into the rise and fall of this fascinating culture.
Another great museum is Palacio Canton, or the anthropology and history museum. As impressive as the exhibits are, it’s also worth appreciating the decadent architecture with its Doric and Ionic columns, marble and beautiful staircase.
