Experience some of the United States’ most exciting wildlife refuges for free on select days in 2016. The National Wildlife Refuge System recently announced free fee days for national wildlife refuges across the country. Experience the country’s diverse wildlife in stunning natural settings.
This year’s free fee days take place Feb. 13–15 (Presidents’ Day weekend), Sept. 24 (National Public Lands Day), Oct. 9 (first Sunday of National Wildlife Refuge Week) and Nov. 11–13 (Veterans Day weekend). There’s at least one national wildlife refuge in every state and one within an hour’s drive of most major metropolitan areas. Of the nation’s 563 wildlife refuges, more than 450 are open to the public.
In addition to free fee days, fourth graders and their families can obtain year-round complimentary entry to all federal lands and waters through the Every Kid in a Park Initiative. Free annual passes are available for active military members and for volunteers who accrue more than 250 hours. Free lifetime passes are available for people with permanent disabilities. A $10 lifetime senior pass is available to individuals 62 and older. The general public pass costs $80 annually.
