Tips for Attending New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

Tips / Destination

New Orleans offers great live music throughout the year. However, the city’s biggest live music experience is the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The festival began in 1970 and celebrates the music and culture of New Orleans. It attracts big-name musicians as well as popular local acts. If you plan to attend the event this year or in the future, follow our tips for making the most of your experience.

Prepare for the Elements

The festival is held rain or shine, so check the forecast and dress appropriately — that includes sensible footwear. Don’t forget sunscreen, as many stages are completely outdoors. Some of the tents have misters lightly spraying water, a nice respite on a hot day. In the event of extreme weather, like severe thunderstorms, the festival will be delayed.

Come Hungry

Much like the city itself, the festival is known for its incredible food. Some dishes, including a mac and cheese-style dish called Crawfish Monica, are only available during Jazzfest. Eat small servings or share, so you can sample more items. Alcohol is served, though be sure to drink responsibly. Don’t find yourself completely wasted by 11 a.m. when there is a full day of music ahead.

Reserve Your Spot

The schedule is released well in advance, so make a plan for the day or days you’re attending. If there is a big-name act you want to see, especially those on the main stage, find a space early. There are no assigned seats, so prepare to wait for a good spot. If you want to experience the entire festival, simply stroll from stage to stage to discover musicians you would otherwise never see live.

Get Social

Follow the festival on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for all the latest information.

What to Do During a Trip to Morro Bay, California

No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.
