Tips / Travel

News feeds and travel sites flood the internet with tips regarding where to travel in 2018. From the newest “it” destinations to the lesser-known locales travelers should visit before the rest of the world, these lists provide helpful information for a year of travel. But travelers should also consider which locations to avoid this year (such as the following) whether for safety, overcrowding or financial reasons.

Cinque Terre

This picturesque coastal Italian area is one postcards are made of. But due to immense popularity, the small Italian town plans to set a cap on the number of visitors allowed to roam the hills and snap photos of the colorful cliffside buildings. To avoid possible denial of entry and the inevitable hordes of tourists, consider visiting in the off-season.

Barcelona

Data from 2017 revealed Spain as the world’s second-most popular tourist destination, moving one spot ahead of the United States. Much of the tourism is centered on Barcelona, the Mediterranean city with an artsy vibe and world-renowned cuisine. Instead of braving the crowds outside Sagrada Familia, opt for a daytrip up the coast to Girona or down the coast to Sitges or Valencia.

Dubrovnik

This medieval town on the Adriatic coast draws visitors to its walled city, bright orange rooftops and the fact it served as a filming location for Game of Thrones. But the Croatian city plans to limit its daily number of visitors to just 4,000 in order to preserve its history and UNESCO status.

Antarctica

This country/continent is prominent on many a bucket list, partly due to its remote location and elusive access. But an increasing number of visitors puts the environment and landscape in jeopardy. For a similar (and less-expensive) experience, consider exploring Greenland or northern Canada.
