Tips / Safety

Travelers who stick to big international cities typically have all the comforts of Western civilization available within a few blocks. But for those more adventure-minded travelers who opt to veer off the frequented paths, the nearest pharmacy may be miles, or days, away. For this subset of travelers, packing a personal first aid kit is an essential preparation before venturing across the world to an unknown land.

A quality first-aid kit should include a few of the basics including adhesive bandages, hand sanitizer, an antiseptic solution to clean wounds and a decent amount of gauze. Anything beyond these crucial staples is dependent on the traveler’s individual needs and destination.

Those who are traversing hot and humid climates may also want to pack oral rehydration remedies like specialized salts or powders that can be mixed with water, as well as anti-diarrheal medication in case of food poisoning or intestinal disagreements. Aloe vera is a wise addition in the case of sunburn that cannot stand up to over-the-counter sun block.

As far as medication is concerned, be sure to pack enough of your prescription meds plus extra in case of an unexpected trip extension. Other medicinal staples should include ibuprofen, motion-sickness pills and, if applicable, altitude sickness remedies.

Ultra-prepared travelers can also look up the local words for certain medications and write them down in case a pharmacy visit is required and English is not spoken or read.
